California

California is all about variety and a giant outdoor playground. From soaking up the sandy beaches of the Pacific Coast to driving out into the desert and sipping wine in Napa, it’s no wonder California attracts travelers from all over the world. With 9 national parks, over 800 miles of coastline, and everything from mountains to valleys, it’s a place where outdoor adventures and city life mix perfectly. Whether you’re into hiking, surfing, or just exploring, California has something for everyone.

Based on my own experience, below I’ve put together an overview of California to help you plan your dream trip.

  • Where: West Coast of the United States, borders with Oregon, Nevada and Arizona
  • Best time to visit: year-round but for fewer crowds spring and fall is the best time
  • How many days: if you’re doing a West Coast road trip, then aim for at least 7-10 days. This will allow you to explore a mix of cities and national parks.
  • Largest city: Los Angeles is not only the largest city in California but also one of the largest in the USA
  • National parks: 9 total, including Yosemite, Sequoia, Joshua Tree, Death Valley, Channel Islands, Kings Canyon, Lassen Volcanic, Pinnacles, Redwood
  • Unique towns: Carmel by the Sea is a charming coastal town along the famous Pacific Coast Highway; Big Sur is famous for its dramatic coastline and scenic drives; Napa for its vineyards and wineries
  • Coastline: popular destinations include San Diego, Malibu, Santa Barbara as well as Monterey
  • Best way to explore: is by car, especially for road trips. You really don’t want to miss driving along the scenic Pacific Coast Highway, visit national parks and explore small towns at your own pace.
